Music appreciation – Music is very important to our overall development. For this reason, music is played in the hallways and classrooms. Each month the music teacher focuses on a classic composer such as Brahms, Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky, Handel, and Beethoven. The composer’s music is then played in the hallway and classrooms throughout the month.

General music – students are taught general principles of music in music class one time per week. The student’s sing patriotic songs, listen to and learn about classical music and composers, and are taught the basics of music theory. Burke holds a Christmas Concert in December and a Patriotism themed Spring concert to celebrate the songs the students have been learning all year.

Choir – Burke Basic School has a choir for the 5th-6th grades. The choir practices once a week and performs twice a year during the general music concerts.

Strings & Guitar – Burke Basic School offers a strings class after school for violin and viola and a guitar class afterschool. The students learn basic skills and hold a recital two times a year.

Students must have their parent/guardian sign a permission slip to attend any afterschool music classes. Students are responsible for procuring instruments, books and any additional materials needed for the class. Permission slips are handed out the first part of September each year.
